We all know that the energy we use today is not unlimited, yet we take it for granted. Oil, gas, power and water has limited availability. However have we taken enough precautions to deal with a possible energy crisis ? Oil and gas have already become too expensive. Do you know that the average home in America uses between $1300 - $1900 in energy costs a year ? The technology for finding oil has improved greatly since the major oil discoveries, yet little oil has been found in recent years. The heyday of oil discovery was from 1950 to 1980. It is difficult to avoid the conclusion… most of the oil has been found. The Earth total endowment of oil before humans started using it was roughly 2 trillion barrels of recoverable oil. It is now half used up. Consumption is currently 31 billion barrels a year. If you crunch the numbers there are 32 years before oil will be gone, presuming the rate of consumption does not change. It’s inevitable that we will see the return of oil over $100 a barrel of oil. The bar graph shows oil, coal and natural gas supplying 85% of the worlds energy supply in 2008.
Coal, Nuclear and Hydro - are used mainly to make electricity.
Natural Gas - is widely used for heating and Biomass (ie. wood and dried dung)
Oil - Powers machines that move, produce and transport food and airplanes that carry people across the widest oceans. Clearly we live in the age of oil, but it is soon drawing to a close.
The red is primarily Wind Power and Solar Power. Although the area is small we can all help to gradually make it larger if we act now by transitioning to sustainable, renewable energy sources.
Make power at home with solar and wind energy to save the environment and eliminate your power bill.
Can we afford to wait until a crisis forces us to do something ?
